Ty Walker: In their words

Washington, District of Columbia

Having a gender firming space when getting your haircut is important. Gender can be a very complex and personal idea to describe in a consultation. For even the best stylist, it can take a few appointments for my guess and I to be on the same page it can change in between appointments and sometimes we take baby steps to get where we wanna be! Having a person who can focus on how your hair makes you feel every day is the most important. Also, most trans people don’t have practice and communicating/styling/having the hair length of hair they want, although this is not a trans exclusive experience, with drastic amount of less or more hair/money/time comes different levels of maintenance. You need to have a space and a person that will adjust to whatever place or pace you’re at in the hair game! I always try to talk about what someone is currently doing and that ranges from a detailed routine to “uhh well nothing!” so we talk about my guests, concerns and goals. Then, if I have suggestions, I give them! To me the best appointments have a mini class in your hair we talk about how to maintain the cut you have and or what’s needed to achieve the goals down the line, or when you’re styling at home.
